Camp Horace Johnson...
- Is seven acres of forest and fun on Island Lake, 25 miles North of Duluth on St. Louis County Road #4 (Rice Lake Road).
- Is a great place to be in the winter or summer. The camp is quiet and has much to offer, including fishing, hiking, swimming, games, boating, canoeing and Scout skills. Thirty people can be accommodated in the Lodge for Pack and Troop activities. Camping areas are available year-round for a real out-of-door experience.
- Exists to provide Scout units, families and like-minded organizations the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities endorsed by the BSA.
- Is used extensively to accommodate many quality Scouting activities throughout the year. Scouting units are encouraged to utilize Camp Horace Johnson and take advantage of this beautiful property.
Rental Fees
Camp Horace Johnson’s Lodge has room for 30 campers, electrical kitchen with stoves and refrigerator, fireplace, gas heat. Separate bunk rooms for male & female leaders. Bring your own sleeping pads.
There is a $25.00 deposit required to reserve Camp Horace Johnson which must be paid 30 days prior to the date of use. Failure to pay will forfeit use of Camp. Units must notify the Council Service Center 30 days in advance of any cancellations to have their deposit refunded.
Following is the fee to use Camp Horace Johnson as of January 1, 2008. There is a two-night minimum per rental.
- Rental Fee - $60.00
- Voyageurs Wilderness Corp Rate - $45.00
- Gold Card Units - $35.00
- Combination VWC and Gold Card - $25.00
- Out of Council BSA*** - $75.00
- Non-Scout Units - $100.00
*** Out of Council Units in transit, if camp is available, can stay and pay for only one night

Contact the Voyageurs Area Council Service Center.
A deposit of $25 will hold your reservation. Non-Scout groups must pay the entire fee with reservation. Council Service Center must be notified 30 days in advance of any cancellations. No refunds for no-shows. All reservations are subject to camp availability. Be sure to place your reservation early so alternate plans can be made if scheduling difficulties arise.
Please write separate checks for deposit and reservation fees.
There is a 90-day wait between unit reservations for Camp Horace Johnson.
Additional Information
- Check out time is noon.
- Rental fees required to pick up keys.
- Deposit will be returned after keys are returned along with list of people using the camp and a Council inspection of camp. Leave your area cleaner than you found it!
- All fees subject to periodic change.
- Equipment lost or damaged will be the responsibility of the campers.
- Campers must abide by Camp Horace Johnson rules and guidelines and provide their own accident insurance.
