NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING

July 13-19, 2008

Camp Horace Johnson

National Youth Leadership Training (formerly known as Junior Leader Training—JLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experiences they can use in their home troops, and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO.  The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO.  The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a six-day course.  Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment.  Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of mnemonics (memory aids), which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.

Voyageurs Area Council will be offering a NYLT course at Camp Horace Johnson July 13-19, 2008.  The cost for the course is $195.00 per Scout.    A non-refundable (but transferable) deposit of $50 is required with registration, with the remainder of the fee due by July 1.  There are a limited amount of camperships available for up to 1/3 of the cost of the course for qualified Scouts. Contact the Council Service Center for more information concerning camperships. Registrations are due by June 9, 2008. The course will be cancelled if there are not enough registrations by June 10th.

NYLT is open to mature Scouts in your Troop who are at least 13 years of age (or will be by July 13), must have attained the rank of First Class and be recommended by the Scoutmaster.  (NO EXCEPTIONS!)  It is recommended that the Scout currently hold a leadership position in the Troop but not required.  Troops will be allowed to register five Scouts for the course on a first come, first served basis.  Registration is limited to the first thirty-six (36) who register.

This is a COMPLETE UNIFORM Scouting activity.  All participants will need to have at least one complete Scout uniform consisting of Scout uniform shirt with all appropriate insignia, Scout uniform trousers or shorts, Scout belt and Scout socks.  The proper wearing of the uniform will be adhered to during this training session.  A confirmation letter with a personal equipment list will be sent to each participant after the Council has received the unit’s registration.
